Australasian Shovelers

December is one of the best times to witness nuptial plumage at its peak. Our Australasian shovelers are just fantastic right now! Within our flock, there are ranges of variation between the males, which is a natural occurrence within the species. Some males have whiter breasts, the facial crescent is much bolder on some than others, flanks can either be more barred or more spotted. Competition between the males is ramping up as mate selection for the upcoming breeding season commences. They are very vocal and active in their pursuit! The males here begin to molt this plumage in and around March, making for a relatively short window to enjoy their unique plumage!
